How was YouShift born?
Our story
The initiative to create YouShift arose from a personal experience for one of our founders, Adolfo. His sister is a resident doctor at the La Princesa hospital in Madrid where, as in all of Spain, the assignment of medical shifts was done manually. Adolfo was able to see first-hand the impact, both emotional and physical, that his sister was suffering due to this system: conflicts between colleagues, cancelled family trips and even having to face up to five consecutive shifts.
This is what prompted Adolfo to look for a solution. Together with his brother, they created Autoguardias, a simple platform that used smart assignment to automate shifts more fairly and efficiently while prioritizing doctors' preferences.
Although Autoguardias was a promising solution, the project was put on hold for a while due to a lack of resources. It was in December 2022 that four Spanish friends from Harvard decided to join forces to take it further. We recognized that we could do something significant to improve the working conditions of doctors and the quality of medical care in general. This is how YouShift was born: a completely redesigned platform, with new functionalities and nourished by the feedback received in conversations with different hospitals in Spain and other countries. Now, the goal is to make YouShift the definitive solution to the challenge of assigning on-call shifts so that it is a simple, fast, transparent and equitable process.
